Regreso Al Eden or One Moment Changes Everything

Regreso Al Eden

Author: Jethro Kloss

Spanish Edition

One Moment Changes Everything: The All-America Tragedy of Don Rogers

Author: Sean D Harvey

Don Rogers was a three-sport phenomenon who energized a forgotten corner of the world (North Sacramento). He could run, jump and tackle better than anyone in California. A role model to children, he became both an honor student and a consensus All- American football player for UCLA, where he dominated two Rose Bowls and was a favorite of fans and sportswriters alike. Rogers went on to become a first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns and was voted rookie of the year in 1984. Then it fell apart.

Just one week after the overdose death of basketball star Len Bias, and only one day before his marriage to his college sweetheart, while in the upstairs bedroom of his mother's home Rogers made the incomprehensible decision to use cocaine, and died just hours later. This All-American story is about a good man whose life transcended sports, and whose death continues to spur important debate about burden, love, addiction, responsibility, and what constitutes happiness in the material world.

Publishers Weekly

Emotional energy is "an aliveness of the mind, a happiness of the heart, and a spirit filled with hope"-and unfortunately, it's not always easy to come by. When we feel grouchy and lethargic, when we drag our heels through life and avoid treating ourselves to things we enjoy, then, writes psychotherapistKirshenbaum, we're likely suffering from emotional fatigue. And we're hardly alone: according to the National Institutes of Health, one individual in eight becomes saddled with a stubborn case of the blahs. In this upbeat and consumer-friendly how-to, the author of Too Good to Leave, Too Bad to Stay strives to shrink that stat. By sharing real-life anecdotes and posing pointed questions-"Do you live in fear of other people's judgments?"; "[Do] you frequently compare yourself to others and feel resentful?"-Kirshenbaum helps readers identify the roots of their lethargy, and implement the appropriate strategies for regaining their spunk. Her solutions are straightforward (and perhaps easier said than done): Stop the negative thinking; focus on the positive. Envision yourself with pep; invest in what you can control. Like all self-help books, this volume should not be treated as a magical elixir, and Kirshenbaum is careful to advise readers whose fatigue may be associated with psychological or physical illness to seek professional help. But it may be enough to lift readers out of the doldrums, which makes the going worthwhile. (Jan.) Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

Mira Kirshenbaum's latest book addresses the most important and least understood ingredient in maintaining high energy. This practical, easy to understand book takes cutting edge research and puts it in the hands and hearts of everyone who wants the opportunity for a high spirited life. Every patient I see asks me how to increase energy; Mira has provided the answer. Highly recommended.
—Arthur P.Ciaramicoli, Ed.D., Ph.D., author of The Power of Empathy

Kelly R. Hale
Fascinating! I think people need to grasp the premise in this book that physical energy amounts to only 30% of total energy. 70% of a person's energy must come from emotional energy. All this untapped energy and we're not even tuned in. Everyone should read this book. Thyroid patients could especially be empowered with such knowledge.

Inner Yoga: Selected Writings of Sri Arivan

Author: Sri Anirvan

In Inner Yoga Sri Anirvan explores in depth the various levels of spiritual practice, offering practical advice to the seeker as well as explications of the connections between mind and body. He speaks with the deep knowledge of an accomplished yogi who has absorbed the texts and who illuminates the experiences of a practitioner: "We have seen how strenuous an effort is required to remove [the mind's] restlessness and fix the mind on an object. We usually call this the effort of meditation. But if we try to meditate not with the mind, but with the awareness, the effort becomes easier."

Step-by-Step Ballet Class

Author: Royal Academy of Dancing

Seven lessons follow a young dancer's development, from basic positions and postures to more advanced levels.

Library Journal

This title follows the updated International Examination Syllabus by illustrating a selection of exercises for pre-primary through grade five students taught at the Royal Academy of Dancing. Professional preparation is also discussed. Unfortunately, the illustrated instruction assumes a high level of knowledge and instructional assistance for comprehension, and access to the glossary is restricted by its awkward placement on page 14, between "How To Tie the Ribbons" and "Taking an Examination." Of greatest interest is the section that tracks a day in the life of two ballet students and provides eight short autobiographies of international dancers. For instructional purposes, the format is simply outmoded, as many dance guides are now on videocassette, including the Royal Academy's own 1991 videocassette, Grades Examinations Syllabus for Girls and Boys. For comprehensive dance collections only.-Irene Herold, Monmouth Coll. Lib., Ill.

Meds Money and Manners or Discretionary Time

Meds, Money, and Manners: The Case Management of Severe Mental Illness

Author: Jerry E Floersch

As case management has replaced institutional care for mental health patients in recent decades, case management theory has grown in complexity and variety of models. But how are these models translated into real experience? How do caseworkers use both textbook and practical knowledge to assist clients with managing their medication and their money? Using ethnographic and historical-sociological methods, Meds, Money, and Manners: The Case Management of Severe Mental Illness uncovers unexpected differences between written and oral accounts of case management in practice. In the process, it suggests the possibility of small acts of resistance and challenges the myth of social workers as agents of state power and social control.

Booknews

Having worked with and studied case managers while they mobilized resources in a mental health organization to enable former hospital patients to continue living in communities, Floersch (social service administration, U. of Chicago), describes how they use case management theory called continuum-of-care or community reintegration to produce apartment-dwelling consumers of mental health services. Interesting book: The Cultures of Caregiving or The Global Resistance Reader

Discretionary Time: A New Measure of Freedom

Author: Robert E Goodin

A healthy work-life balance has become increasingly important to people trying to cope with the pressures of contemporary society. This trend highlights the fallacy of assessing well-being in terms of finance alone; how much time we have matters just as much as how much money. The authors of this book have developed a novel way to measure 'discretionary time': time which is free to spend as one pleases. Exploring data from the US, Australia, Germany, France, Sweden and Finland, they show that temporal autonomy varies substantially across different countries and under different living conditions. By calibrating how much control people have over their time, and how much they could have under alternative welfare, gender or household arrangements, this book offers a new perspective for comparative cross-national enquiries into the temporal aspects of human welfare.

Healthy Living with Hypertension or Engine 2 Diet

Healthy Living with Hypertension: A Guide for African Americans

Author: Cheryl Campbell Atkinson

"Soul Food" is a term coined by African Americans to capture the uniqueness of the cooking style utilized for themselves, families and friends, all prepared with love, care and lots of soul. Many of these foods are rich in vitamins and minerals, but are also rich or high in total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium (salt).

Cutting back on salt, as well as providing recipes that are lower in sodium, fat, and cholesterol, will help to promote "heart-healthy living".

Engine 2 Diet: The Texas Firefighter's 28-Day Save-Your-Life Plan That Lowers Cholesterol and Burns Away the Pounds

Author: Rip Esselstyn

As a fireman Rip Esselstyn has helped people and saved lives, but with his ENGINE 2 DIET plan he will help save lives on a much larger scale. A world-class professional triathlete-turned-fireman, as well as the son, grandson and great-grandson of renowned physicians, Rip Esselstyn knows how to live a healthy lifestyle. So, when he learned that one of his fellow Engine 2 firefighter's cholesterol level was dangerously high, he immediately went into action. First, he created THE ENGINE 2 DIET, a 28-day health and weight loss program. Next, he enlisted not only his at-risk friend, but the entire firehouse to follow the plan. Everyone lost weight (some more than 20 pounds!), lowered their cholesterol and improved their overall health. Encouraged, Rip went on to further prove the effectiveness of his plan through a citywide study--and the results were even more amazing! In this easy-to-follow, 28-day program, readers are given a choice of two plans; the Fire Cadet Plan begins with a "flexitarian" approach to eating that includes a nutrient-rich, mostly plant-based diet featuring fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, some fish and chicken, and the other, the Firefighter Plan, is all plant-based. To ensure every reader's success, THE ENGINE 2 DIET also includes recipes, meal plans, grocery lists, cooking tips, and a firefighter-inspired exercise program to boost metabolism, build strength and endurance.

Author: Francine Ratner Kaufman MD

Experts now predict that more than one-third of American children born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Written by one of the world’s leading authorities on the link between obesity and diabetes, this passionate, frightening–but ultimately hopeful–book points the way to a solution.

To enter Dr. Francine Kaufman’s clinic is to see the future of America: a 220-pound twelve-year-old boy…a 267-pound thirteen-year-old girl…their concerned but equally overweight parents…the human faces and human suffering behind the epidemic of type 2 diabetes that threatens to overwhelm our health care system. Once a disease of the elderly, type 2 diabetes now strikes adults in their prime–and, increasingly, children. It has nearly doubled in the last decade. The cause? Our soaring rates of obesity.

Diabesity takes us to the front lines of the fight against this preventable but deadly disease. Through vivid patient stories, it explains how excess weight destroys the body’s ability to process sugar properly–with life-threatening consequences. It shows what happens when the genes that evolved to protect us from famine collide with a sedentary lifestyle that has put bacon cheeseburgers on every corner. And it demonstrates why our usual blame-the-victim response is futile in face of the complex, worldwide forces behind this epidemic.

Detailing the tools for change at every level–from families to school systems to government–and reporting on innovative programs that are already making a difference, Diabesity offers a compelling action plan for winning this battle.

Publishers Weekly

Kaufman explains the severity of the obesity/diabetes epidemic this way: "our ancient genes and our modern environment have collided," and so many adults and children are now being diagnosed with the disease that it "imperils human existence as we now know it." The author, who recently served as president of the American Diabetes Association and was instrumental in banning the sale of soda in Los Angeles schools, notes that the sharp increase in the number of diabetics in the U.S. mirrors the increased incidence of obesity (hence the word "diabesity," first used by health journalists in the late 1990s). Her first-rate, important book discusses the diagnosis of diabetes and its subsequent sequelae, the world history of both diabetes and obesity, and, most importantly, what must be done to fix the problem. Not so much a how-to for patients as a call to arms for policy makers and those in the health-care industry, the book intersperses riveting case studies that serve to accentuate the importance of "creating a new normal" mode of behavior in American culture-one that includes eating intelligently and exercising diligently. Kaufman has taken on a difficult topic, but her text is easy to understand and will be useful to many. Agent, Adam Chromy. (Mar.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Fueled by the increased incidence of obesity in the American population, diabetes has become the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Hence, experts have begun to link the two as a single problem of "diabesity," especially in children. A pediatric endocrinologist and former president of the American Diabetes Association, Kaufman has written an enlightening text on this epidemic and its impact on the individual, family, and society. She explains how obesity triggers diabetes, the devastating long-term effects on the human body, and what means of prevention and treatment are available. She also relates the history of diabetes as it has evolved with changes in culture and lifestyle and explains what can be done through education and healthcare systems to improve individuals' health. Kaufman's sympathetic, nonjudgmental accounts of her patients highlight the many factors contributing to the problem, and her compassion and dedication shine through. This engrossing volume is recommended for all consumer health collections. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 7/04.]-Janet M. Schneider, James A. Riding the Windhorse: Manic-Depressive Disorder and the Quest for Wholeness

Author: Robert S Corrington

In this account of his struggles with manic-depressive disorder, distinguished philosopher Robert S. Corrington, creator of the school of ecstatic naturalism, presents a compelling argument for rethinking the nature of this malady. Having inherited the disorder from his mother, a gifted actress, who struggled with her own form of it until her death, he early on developed crucial survival strategies that he here recommends to other sufferers. In this study Professor Corrington details the latest medical, psychological, and spiritual thinking about bipolar disease; a disorder characterized by extreme mood swings and that is responsible for many untimely deaths each year. However, manic-depression is also found in almost all forms of genius and Professor Corrington presents two detailed case studies showing this correlation, that of the English scientist Sir Isaac Newton and the Indian mystic Sri Ramakrishna. The book represents one person's eventual triumph over a potentially crippling disease and shows that creativity and the quest for wholeness can support the erratic flight of the windhorse of manic-depression.

Making Peace with Chronic Pain or Ever Since I Had My Baby

Making Peace with Chronic Pain: A Whole-Life Strategy

Author: Marlene E Hunter

Offers advice on how to deal with everyday physical pain and psychological Pain, Including Pain Relief Techniques, Lifestyle Changes, Emotional changes, coping skills and medication.

Lorraine Amorosi

Using the metaphor of "the dance," the author outlines various strategies and coping mechanisms to help people live with chronic pain. The book recognizes that chronic pain significantly intrudes on one's life and offers mechanisms to help people respond differently to their pain, therefore gaining control of their life as well as their pain. The purpose is to help people gradually change their concept of chronic pain and their attitudes toward it. It identifies internal and external factors associated with pain and offers solutions to understanding and controlling one's pain. The audience for this book is vast; it is for healthcare providers as well as for people who live with chronic pain. The book outlines the physiology as well as the psychological aspects of pain; if one is to control pain, one must understand both etiologies of pain. For those that live with pain this book is extremely helpful. It primarily justifies how "real" their pain is, helps to define what they feel but may not be able to articulate, and offers them concrete mechanisms to put them back in control of their lives. At the end of each chapter there is a summary of the topics discussed as well as worksheet on which a person's level, or "the dancers," of the pain are assessed. These are unique features that make this book very user-friendly and help to serve as resource. Practitioners can extract these worksheets for their own patients' use. I found this book to be worthwhile in addressing the reality of pain, the physical and psychological components of pain, and coping strategies of living with chronic pain. I did not relate to the metaphor of "the dance"; I could understand why the author chose themetaphor, yet I thought another metaphor would have been more appropriate. I liked the holistic approach to pain management. The book appropriately discusses pain medications, yet concentrates on one's internal strengths to help control their pain. The book gives a feeling of hope and offers empowerment to those living with chronic pain.

•incontinence
•prolapse
•pressure and pain
•sexual difficulties
•bowel troubles

Pelvic-floor disorders are much more common than you might think—millions of women suffer from one or more symptoms of pelvic-floor injury. These problems often stem from the strain placed on the body during pregnancy and childbirth, although symptoms may take years, or decades, to appear—if they don’t begin right away. Childbirth can wreak havoc on even the healthiest woman’s body, and you may still be feeling the effects long after the birth of your last child.

If you suffer from any of these conditions, you do not need to feel helpless, and you are certainly not alone. Every one of these pelvic disorders is treatable, even curable in many cases. Dr. Roger Goldberg, a respected physician in the emerging field of urogynecology, provides the most up-to-date information on surgical and nonsurgical treatment options. He offers aclear explanation of the pelvic anatomy and why these disorders occur and also describes simple preventive techniques you can use to ease pelvic symptoms and minimize further strain (including the correct way to do Kegel exercises).

Armed with the facts and candid advice contained in Ever Since I Had My Baby, you will be able to discuss your individual symptoms and potential treatments with your doctor confidently and knowledgeably. This book will help you realize the freedom you’ve been seeking from the emotional and physical burden of symptoms that often go unmentioned, or are overlooked, in women’s health care.

Reviewer: Diana Marta, BSN, RN (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This is an excellent guide to psychiatric disorders designed to assist the patient, family, and support people in making good decisions about treatment.
Purpose: The objective is to inform people about mental illness and encourage them to get the help they need and to make educated decisions. Attempting to advocate for the patient by helping him make good treatment decisions is definitely a worthwhile goal and the author has accomplished this successfully.
Audience: This reference is aimed at the lay person or for a professional to recommend to a patient, which would be appropriate for almost any mental illness. It gives basic information in a thoroughly readable, not academic, style. The author has treated over 15,000 patients, teaches at the university level, and has authored several books for professionals. It is clear that he hasn't lost touch with the needs of his patients.
Features: The book describes disorders, medications, and therapies, as well as anticipating and addressing the many questions and fears that patients often have in the course of treatment. The vignettes are short and effective. The author answers the questions many people are afraid to ask, and explains things clearly without being patronizing. This book was written to empower the patient and family in getting the best mental healthcare. My only regret that it won't be read by all patients.
Assessment: This is an easy-to-read and very thorough reference for virtually any question a person might have about mental illness and its treatment. It answers many questions that patients often have before they seek treatment and, in many cases, may mean the difference between a person getting the help they need or not. Its tone isn't "ivory tower" but rather the sort of advice you'd hope to get from a caring friend. The author is clearly a patient advocate in the best sense of the word.

Library Journal

Morrison (clinical psychiatry, Oregon Health and Science Univ.; DSM-IV Made Easy) adds to his growing list of works this effective lay readers' guide to treating mental illness. As the author reveals, many people put off getting help for fear of what their treatment may involve, the cost of treatment, of being stigmatized, and the side effects of medication. Morrison provides authoritative answers to those and many other concerns typically raised by individuals and their families, organizing the material into sections on seeking help, mental disorders, and, most important, treatment options. Morrison explains which treatments work best for which illnesses, detailing numerous drugs, including the new generation of antipsychotics. Although written for consumers, this book will also well serve professionals and students and nicely complements Daniel G. Amen's Healing the Hardware of the Soul. Highly recommended for all public libraries.-Dale Farris, Groves, TX

Booknews

Explaining what really works for a range of psychological difficulties, this guide for general readers tells how to seek help for mental problems and how clinicians determine what is wrong, explains how treatments work and which problems they address, and describes the symptoms and course of various mental health diagnoses and the treatments that are most likely to work. There is much information on drug side effects, interactions, and prices. Morrison is a psychiatrist and educator who has written several books for professionals. He teaches clinical psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Driving with Care: Education and Treatment of the Impaired Driving Offender: Strategies for Responsible Living and Change

Author: Kenneth W Wanberg

Driving With CARE (DWC) is a three-level education and treatment program for persons convicted of driving while impaired (DWI).  Clients learn that change in behavior is made by changing their thoughts, attitudes and beliefs. They learn about their own patterns of drug use and abuse and how to make cognitive and behavioral changes so as to prevent recidivism into DWI behavior and prevent future involvement in a pattern of alcohol or other drug (AOD) use that can lead to AOD problems and to impaired driving behavior. Participants take an active part in exercises, work sheets and group discussion.

The Provider's Guide presents a comprehensive overview of cognitive behavioral treatment for impaired driving offenders; a thorough review theory and practice related to client evaluation; legal and cultural considerations; as well as operational procedures for assessing and matching DWI offenders to appropriate levels of education and treatment services. Guidelines are provided for developing individualized treatment plans, and implementing appropriate education and treatment curriculum protocol whereby clients relate and apply the lesson and session material to their own unique circumstances and situations. Clients learn self-control over thinking and actions, responsible behavior towards others and the community.

Palliative Ethics of Care: Clinical Wisdom at Life's End

Author: Joseph J Fins

Thid book presents a unique, innovative approach to caring for the terminally ill patient. Using vignettes, the text explains how to develop a set of patient/physician goals for improving quality of life, resolving end of life issues, and generally treating dying patients.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: David B Cotton, MA; MDiv. (Jersey Shore University Medical Center)
Description: Dr. Fins, in a highly readable, conversational style, presents residents and experienced physicians with a two-part guide to the ethics of caring for patients at the end of life. Part one traces the ethical and legal underpinnings of palliative care, along with some historical context for its appearance on the medical-ethical landscape. Part two is a comprehensive guide for practical application, featuring a specific clinical pathway with goal setting as its guiding principle.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate physicians-in-training regarding the best way to care for the dying. It shares principles and offers relevant information on the skills and strategies necessary for developing a plan of care that meets the patient's needs and respects the patient's goals. In the literature and in the life of the hospital, it is evident that physicians are well prepared for high-tech, aggressive, curative interventions. They are, on the other hand, quite ill prepared to address the complex bundle of issues surrounding death and dying. This book takes direct aim at correcting this imbalance.
Audience: The book is directed specifically to physicians-in-training, especially residents and perhaps fellows. Dr.Fins' wealth of experience and impressive educational credentials combine to make this book worthwhile for practitioners at any level. Reading it is like being on rounds with a master!
Features: The book is divided into two distinct sections. The first chapter addresses the audience directly, stating the case for learning what the book teaches. The following three chapters present the historical, ethical, and legal contexts pertinent to the rise of bioethics consults and the growing emphasis on end-of-life care. The second section builds upon this ethical, historical, and legal framework by presenting a practical guide for bedside care of the dying. This section begins by stressing the importance of the often overlooked step of goal-setting. The need to communicate and formulate a plan of care centered on the patient's and/or family's goals is the most important contribution of the book. The entire application section is centered upon the critical issue of the goal of care as the driver of medical decisions. Fins presents the reader with a Goals of Care Assessment Tool (GCAT) in the book's appendix. It is a terrific answer to the medical-ethical dilemma that presents itself when the physician reaches the point of asking the all-too-familiar question, "Which direction should I go from here with this patient?" Exhausted residents may be tempted to skip the first section and cut right to the practical stuff, but those who hang in there will gain a great deal of wisdom in return for a small sacrifice of time.
Assessment: This is a comprehensive, yet concise, compelling review of the concept, the context, and the content of quality end-of-life care. The emphasis on the need for individual medical decisions to be driven and directed by the goal of care is the book's finest hour and most important contribution. Hopefully it will make the pronouncement, "There's nothing more we can do," obsolete. Dr. Fins encourages and empowers the professional with the idea that competent, compassionate, goal-centered care is every bit as rewarding as cure.

Hope for the Journey through Cancer or Epilepsy Patient Family Guide

Hope for the Journey through Cancer: Inspiration for Each Day

Author: Yvonne Ortega

Cancer touches nearly everyone, whether firsthand or through the life of a loved one. Counselor and teacher Yvonne Ortega discovered this when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and began her journey to recovery. In Hope for the Journey through Cancer, she shares with readers her personal triumphs and setbacks with humor and refreshing candor, always reminding us of God's desire to meet us exactly where we are. These sixty devotions are divided into sections- diagnosis, surgery, treatment, and recovery- each incorporating Scripture into daily life. Ortega's attention to even the most basic hopes and fears that a cancer patient faces each day offers encouragement that can come only from one who has been there herself.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Jesse Taber, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:This is a comprehensive review of the medical and social aspects of seizures, written for patients and their families. It is divided into six parts covering medical aspects, diagnosis and treatment, epilepsy in children and adults, legal and financial aspects, and resources for people with epilepsy.
Purpose:The purpose is to empower people with epilepsy toward achieving a better quality of life, a topic on which the author has widely published.
Audience:Although this book is written for the layperson, it is a wonderful review for any health care worker, whether physician, nurse, or social worker, involved in the care of people with epilepsy. And for patients and their families, it is a wonderfully complete and readable source.
Features:This is a compact paperback, with a well organized table of contents and complete index. There is a wealth of useful information regarding day-to-day living, including some very thoughtful chapters on parenting, pregnancy, and family and personal relationships. The book also contains explanations of legal rights, employment, and medical insurance. There are a limited number of relevant illustrations and photographs, including patients undergoing EEG testing, neuroimaging procedures, diagrams of neuroanatomy, and color photographs of anticonvulsant medications. The last 14 pages of text contain definitions of medical terminology, selected references, and addresses of pertinent organizations.
Assessment:This is a superbly written book. The author's style is concise, yet clearly explainscomplicated medical issues. His tone throughout is marked by his obvious concern and respect for people with epilepsy. As a neurologist whose practice is largely focused on adults with epilepsy, I am now advising all of my newly diagnosed patients (and most of those with known seizure disorders) to get this book. I will also recommend that our neurology residents read this book, for it provides a window into the lives of our patients and can empower us as well.
